Here's our first shoot with HGTV Magazine. We're so excited to be involved with this new magazine from Hearst. Special thanks to Photo Director Ann DeSassure Davidson and Photo Editor Rachel Barker. As always, they made our job easy.
The Spence family just happened to be friends of friends of ours. We had all been to the same birthday party just a few months before; sitting by a pool, watching 6 year old kids splash around. However, we never knew where they lived, until we got this assignment. It is such a small world. They couldn't have been more accommodating as we invaded their home on a Sunday morning to take this picture.

We did this fun workout story for SELF with Gossip Girl, Kaylee DeFer in New York at the Mercer Hotel in Soho. The idea behind the shoot was what kind of excercises can you do when you don't have much space and you're on the go. Of course, Fitness Director, Meaghan Murphy came up with the moves and Kaylee executed them flawlessly.

We are so pleased to reveal our SECOND cover shot exclusively for the amazing SELF magazine of the equally amazing Jillian Michaels, super-trainer extraordinaire.

We had to fit two days of shooting into one day so we had to plan everything very carefully. Normally for a cover shoot, we would shoot on location one day for the exercises and then one day at a studio for the cover images, but because of the schedule, we had to do it all in one day at a beautiful mansion in Malibu surrounded by a vineyard.

Special thanks to everyone who made this shoot possible and such an amazing success. First and foremost, we want to thank SELF Magazine Editor-In-Chief, Lucy Danziger for giving us so many opportunities over the past years to do so much great work for the magazine. To top it off, it doesn't get much better than photographing a "yoga and wellness adviser to the stars". Mandy Ingber is fit, centered and has a great sense of humor. It is easy to see why she attracts clients such as Jennifer Aniston.

We just finished up a great image campaign for the USA Waterpolo Association to bring more awareness to the sport. We photographed 10 waterpolo players in 4 cities to create the campaign.

It is fun to keep running into our billboard all over town. - 7/6/11

“Are you open for an advertising job ... tomorrow?” asked our rep, Shelly.
“You bet!” as we simultaneously drop everything.
“Well, I’m not really sure if it will happen,” she says (as we begin to gather our other appointments up off the floor). “I’ll let you know as soon as we get approvals”.
We spent the next 24 hours juggling the rest of our lives, for as you know no one is really ever “open”. There are photos to retouch, jobs to bill, people to see, and families to feed.

Then the word came, we were on! We’d be doing an ad for the San Diego Zoo and we would start in 1 hour. We happily dropped everything, again, and took off.

Thank you to our rep, Shelly Steichen, for producing this job with the creative team over at M&C Saatchi, LA. She did a fabulous job pulling in resources for us, such as finding a Chinese Dragon and setting up a rush job with Rocket Studios, a top notch retouching outfit. Two weeks later here we stand, looking at our latest billboards all around Southern California.

Unique iPad Imagery from Larsen&Talbert!

When you have new technology, you get new technological challenges. Some might even call them problems. The iPad is awesome, but as always, designers are scrambling to find the best way to use it. Video is expensive and not sharp enough when the motion is stopped. Strobes aren’t fast enough.

Tone it Up Girls in SELF!

We are very proud of this amazing SIX PAGE layout in this month's SELF Magazine, especially since it almost didn't happen. It's a fitness story featuring the "New Faces of Fitness", Katrina Hodgson and Karena Dawn. Katrina and Karena have built a fitness empire online with www.ToneItUp.com and now they grace the pages of SELF.

We arrived at the beach that day with a full day of shooting planned. Mother nature, however provided us with a cold, gloomy morning with a similar forecast for the day. Luckily, about noon, the sun came out, and we had a short window of time to do fitness moves and some awesome running shots with the girls. We were very impressed with their ability to run at the same exact pace so we caught them in the air together for the closing image.

Karena and Katrina couldn't have been better subjects. They braved the cold February weather and bounded endlessly along the beach in bikinis while the crew shivered in their winter coats. Gorgeous and professional. Now that's a wining combination!

We didn't have much time with the stars of the new movie "Arthur", but we feel like we packed a lot of energy and "moments" into that time. It became very clear that these two were close friends and admired each other very much. They shared a sense of naughty humor and a "been round the block" attitude that is very appealing, especially when it's all delivered with a proper English accent!

Last week one of the movies from Sundance opened in theaters to rave reviews. Paul Giamatti and newcomer, Alex Shaffer star in this quirky but endearing indie film directed by Thomas McCarthy. They were one of the first cast we shot in Park City, and we had no problem getting them to loosen up.

Our portfolio of pictures from the 2011 Sundance Film Festival are out in the April issue of InStyle Magazine!

We set up a studio on Main Street and had appointments for portraits for 5 days in a row in January. We met and photographed some of the legends of the acting world like Jeremy Irons and Demi Moore as well as a lot of up-and-comers like Dominic Cooper and Brit Marling.

It was an honor to be back at Sundance shooting for InStyle, and it was great to be back in Park City, immersed in the world of indie film making.

We are very proud to announce that we have the cover of SELF magazine this month! We've been shooting for SELF for over 10 years and never dreamed we would be considered for the cover. We are still pinching ourselves.

We did a two-day shoot with the lovely Jillian Michaels for the issue. The first day was on location for the exercise moves and weigh loss plan images, the second day was in the studio for the cover image. The location day just happened to be Sept 27 which was the day of record breaking heat in Los Angeles. The temperature soared to 113F downtown, and was near that at our Malibu location. Everyone got through it well though, and the next day was much more comfortable at MILK Studios in Hollywood. Check out the videos below for some behind the scene glimpses of the shoots.

We are thrilled with the results and want to thank everyone involved, especially our long-time champion Jean Cabacungan-Jarvis, the SELF Director of Photography, Creative Director, Cynthia Searight who bravely had faith in us and gifted us this amazing opportunity, Editor-In-Chief and "Energy-In-Chief", the amazing Lucy Danziger, and of course, Ms. Jillian Michaels, your beauty is only surpassed by your generosity. USA Weekend Magazine featured our pictures of Jennifer Grey on the cover this weekend.
We photographed Ms. Grey just a couple days after she won the top spot on Dancing With The Stars. She had just returned to L.A. after a whirlwind tour following her big win on the show. It was incredibly impressive that despite lack of sleep, travel and significant back pain, she was an energetic and generous subject. We did several great set ups at Smashbox Studios in Culver City and had a great day. More behind the scene pictures coming later.

Our shoot with Dr. Jill Biden, the Vice-President's wife is out in SELF magazine. Michael got to go to DC and managed to clear the White House security to photograph Dr. Biden in her office in the Executive Office Building. Having arrived a day early, Michael used his amazing iphone camera skills to capture some of the sights including C-3PO and Julia Child's kitchen at the Smithsonian.

We went to Las Vegas to do this shoot with Trisha Yearwood. Tracy and I have been huge fans of hers for years, so it was really exciting to have a chance to meet and work with her. She's there once a month to do some show with her husband. Can't remember his name or what kind of music he plays, but it's really sweet of her to support him in his hobby ;-)
I bought her latest cookbook and she graciously autographed it. I would say that she is the ultimate professional, super sweet, down-to-earth, etc., but anyone who knows anything about Trisha Yearwood would not be surprised. Great shoot, wonderful artist, awesome magazine.

Launch of Veronica Brett Swimwear

We were very pleased to be involved in the launch of a new line of women's swimwear to benefit breast cancer research. The Veronica Brett line of swimwear is designed specifically for women who have undergone mastectomies. The line was started by a courageous woman named Patricia Brett whose family has been ravaged by the disease and who opted for a double prophylactic mastectomy when she learned that she carried the gene associated with breast cancer. After her surgery she searched for a nice swimsuit but only found styles appropriate for the a much older generation. An architect by trade, Patricia showed that unique American spirit by becoming an expert in this unique brand of clothing design and doing it with high-end flair. Look for a profile of Patricia and her work in this month's Oprah Magazine.

We did the shoot with model Stefanie LaRue and hair & make-up artist Tracy Sondern, both breast cancer survivors. One detail that I love is that Stefanie wanted to keep her port in the picture (on her left arm in the top photo). This is the device they use to deliver medicine during chemotherapy.

Sea Lion Trainer for Popular Mechanics

We LOVE doing shoots for Popular Mechanics. We've done several for their "This is My Job" page. On this one we went to San Diego to photograph a navy trainer and his sea lion. The Navy trains them to find and attach tow lines to bombs or to capture bad guys. I rented an underwater housing for my camera and jumped out of the boat in the open ocean. Awesome.

The shoot was all supposed to be done at a beach in Malibu, but it was so windy and cold, we had to move it to a studio. We did manage to get the above shot of her at the beach before her hair became too messy and the goosebumbs became the size of marbles! Whitney was a trooper though and never complained.

There's a profile of Maggie Rodriquez from the CBS "Early Show" and SELF Fitness editor Meaghan Murphy, and then Meaghan shows off some specific moves that pregnant moms can learn to stay fit and have more energy. With the IPad now out and many magazines adapting their formats to it, we think there will be a lot more demand for video surrounding what used to be just still shoots. This is our first humble attempt. We're excited to participate in the shaping of the future of the media.

Diane Sawyer Parade Cover

On our cover shoot for Parade magazine, we had very little time with Ms. Sawyer and had to do the shoot in a very small space. The photo department at ABC studios in New York was kind enough to offer us the use of their little photo studio which was about the size of a dining room. The folks at Parade really wanted an environmental portrait, so we had to shoot the background separately and put it in digitally. Michael took some of the background pictures at another photo studio in NY, and then he shot some more on his way back to L.A. at JFK airport.
Ms. Sawyer was exhausted and just back from a trip that included Afghanistan, Germany and Washington D.C. She was able to fit the shoot in on her lunch hour before she had to to the World News. We were able to get the shoot done quickly for her sake and add the backgrounds that Parade needed. All in a day's work.

We just did a special shoot with Oscar nominee Stanley Tucci and the captivating young Saoirse Ronan from The Lovely Bones. We only had about about an hour to do the shoot, so we had to move fast. Luckily, we were able to create a relaxed atmosphere where both actors felt comfortable enough to let go a little.
At the end of the shoot, Mr. Tucci declared "That was painless!"
Well of course it was: It was Larsen&Talbert!

Jennifer Beals for First

Michael made the trek to Vancouver Canada to shoot this cover for First for Women magazine. Jennifer lives there with her husband and daughter who stopped by the shoot to say hello.
Jennifer is quite an accomplished photographer in her own right, so Michael was a little nervous, but she was extremely generous and everything went well.
As you can see from the original image below, the magazine changed the color of the background (and Jennifer's ear rings!) to fit the Valentines theme. We think the red looks nice.

It was quite a production with a rented home in Malibu, a producer, three assistants and two people from the magazine who flew out to LA just for the shoot. Jillian was great, super professional and nice, and I think it turned out great!

This week's "First for Women" features our shoot with Mellisa Joan Hart who is on Dancing with the Stars. We did the shoot back in August on one of the hottest days of the year and of course she had to wear sweaters! Needless to say she was a trooper and as nice and bubbly as you can imagine. We had to put the shoot together on short notice and the location had to be close to Beverly Hills, so many thanks to our great friends Sandra and Joe who let us use their beautiful home for the shoot!

Here are some outtakes from our shoot with Cindy Cohen for SELF magazine. It was supposed to be one of those amazing typical blue sky beach days in Malibu, but of course we picked the only day in June that threatened to rain! We made the most of it though. Besides, you can't really go wrong with a beautiful woman, great clothes, and a table full of craft service! She's Got the Look | Model Reality TV Show | TV Land

We did this shoot for the September issue of SELF magazine featuring the winner of the reality tv show "She's Got the Look". Her name is Cindy Cohen and she was so great to work with. I lost my shoe in the waves while we were shooting. I'm glad the didn't show that in the video.

Cover and Inside Spread in Reader's Digest

This month's Reader's Digest features one of our pictures of Jon Hamm from the show "Mad Men" on the cover chip and a really nice two page spread. Jon was a super cool guy to photograph, totally down to earth and easy going. Most of the images you see of him he's in character from the show, so it's interesting to see the "real" Jon Hamm.

The Sutter Family

Here is the latest installment of the chronicles of the Sutter Family! This time we welcomed new baby girl Blakesley Sutter for Life& Style magazine. We first met Trista and Ryan shortly after their televised engagement on The Bachelorette when we photographed them for the cover of Good Housekeeping. Since then we've done about 8 shoots with them, documenting everything from new babies to weight loss and fitness, and shooting in L.A., Vail Colorado and Hawaii. They are super cool people, and we are proud to call them friends.

New Work in SELF Magazine

This is a hair makeover story we did for SELF. We shot it at a super high end salon in Beverly Hills called The Neil George Salon. We took over the office/storage space for the salon and did a major studio set-up. We even had a light out on the sidewalk shining in through the window. The women in the story were regular people that the magazine had chosen and were all really excited and great to work with.

This is a story about Nancy O'Dell and Holly Robinson Peete getting in shape with the SELF Challenge. We shot it at Nancy's beautiful Mediterranean style house. We did exercise shots with Holly, but Nancy had recently hurt her leg on Dancing with the Stars so she sat by the pool working on her journal. Then we did a couple set-ups with the girls cooking healthy food. It was a big production, but everyone had a good time and the layout looks great.

We had two feature stories in this month's SELF magazine (the cover's not ours, but maybe someday!)

Tracy and I finished our 1st 80 mile bike ride last weekend up in Logan Utah. The ride was a fundraiser for MS research. We were a little sore on the second day, but it was great fun and a great cause. We raised over $1,000 thanks to many amazingly generous friends and colleagues! Hog Hunt

We all went to Texas in May to have a wild hog hunt on the Talbert family ranch. We didn't get a hog for some dern reason, but we got some cool pictures of family and friends who did the hunting.

Our latest shoot for Parade was with Disney teen superstar, Selena Gomez. She was super cute, extremely polite and professional and great to work with. She showed up to Smashbox Studios in Hollwood with her Mom, Step-Dad and some Subway sandwiches. Hi Everyone,
This is our first blog entry for our new Larsen&Talbert Blog. We are Michael Larsen and Tracy Talbert, a husband and wife photography team based in Los Angeles. We specialize in portraiture, lifestyle and some food. We've been working together for more than 13 years and just recently noticed that we didn't have a blog. Now that that problem has been solved, we can get on with the business of making photographs and keeping happy clients. This blog will chronicle our personal and photographic adventures: some tear sheets, some personal work, some video, some random blather.
